Restaurant Review: Kin Kao Song, Vancouver

Every since Song (By Kin Kao) appeared on the Michellin’s Bib Gourmand list, I’ve been curious to try it and after trying it, I would say that the award was well deserved.

A glance at the menu and you’ll spot old-school dishes like Tom Yum soup and Pad Thai, but don’t be fooled by their familiarity, the chef makes it a point to nail every component of it. He goes above and beyond to recreate the taste we so desire in classic thai food – the tanginess, the sweetness, the texture, they all blend together so well that I ended up happily paying what other Thai restaurants would wish they could charge for.

The restaurant is situated in the heart of Mt Pleasant – a cosy neighborhood close to downtown. The interior is classy yet simple, modern yet classic, a lot of wood, and some concrete.

We went with the server’s suggestion and got the following for 2 people:

Crispy Tofu (Starter) – $13

Skin was crispy, tofu was light and airy. The dip was sweet and savory with a slight hint of spice – marks of a great appetizer.

Tom Yum Soup (with a bowl of Jasmine rice) – $50 (+$3)

This was the star of the show – the broth was rich and creamy, balancing the flavour of sweet, tangy, and savoury-ness that a tom yum soup should have. The chef chose prawns and oyster mushrooms as the main ingredients and I have no complaints about them – they were absolutely delicious.

Pad Thai (with Prawns) – $27 (+$6)

It’s basically everything a Pad Thai should be – texture, taste, presentation – chef nailed em’ all. I’ve tasted a lot of Pad Thai’s and very often it’s either a little too sour or too sweet or too salty. But this plate, was neither. It was yummy. Prawns were juicy and fresh, garnished with more shrimp – adding to the killer presentation.

There you go! Highly recommended Thai place, seems overpriced but the food is legit. Great for a celebratory meal like an anniversary – relationship takes hard work!

Peace, Daniel
